The Frogs fell to West Virginia in the Big 12 championship game, 62-53.
TCU had a strong past two games, beating BYU in the quarterfinals and Kansas State in the semifinals. Like both those games, the Frogs could never find their rhythm in Kansas City.
Olivia Miles opened up the scoring in the first for the Frogs with a 25-foot three-pointer. The Frogs and the Mountaineers both went on 7-0 runs during the first. West Virginia went up 14-12 heading into the second.
The Frogs continued to fight back against West Virginia, as Marta Suarez’s layup gave TCU a 20-19 lead with under five minutes left in the second, marking TCU’s first lead of the game.
The Mountaineers closed out the half on a 7-0 run to take the lead into the break, up 26-23.
Taylor Bigby got the second half started for TCU with a three-pointer to cut the Mountaineer lead to just two. The Frogs couldn’t buy a basket throughout the third, as West Virginia held TCU to just nine points, putting the Mountaineers up 43-32 at the end of the third.
TCU continued to battle but eventually ran out of time against West Virginia. The Frogs were down 14 late in the fourth quarter and eventually would cut the deficit to six, but couldn’t close out the game.
Olivia Miles led TCU in scoring with 17 points. The Frogs shot 8-31 from three and couldn’t get hot during the game.
Olivia Miles and Marta Suarez were both selected to the Big 12 all-tournament team.
West Virginia earned the Big 12’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament, and now TCU will wait to find out their seeding and if they will host during the tournament.
TCU is projected as a two seed in ESPN’s latest bracketology, but will most likely drop back to the three seed they have been at all year.
The selection show will be on March 15 at 7 p.m. on ESPN. The Frogs will then have their first round game on either March 20 or 21.
