AUSTIN, Texas — Drivers navigating the U.S. 290 and Interstate 35 interchange should expect overnight closures Monday night through early Wednesday morning as crews repair bridge joints on two flyovers.
Starting at 9 p.m. Monday, the flyover from westbound 290 to southbound I-35 will close. Drivers will be directed to the I-35/Waco exit and can access southbound I-35 by turning left at the intersection. The ramp is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m.
At 9 p.m. Tuesday, crews will again close the westbound 290-to-southbound I-35 flyover, along with the Koenig Lane flyover to southbound I-35. Drivers on Koenig Lane can continue east and turn right on the frontage road to reach southbound I-35. Both ramps are expected to reopen by 5 a.m.
The repairs come after posts on social media went viral last month, showing vehicles driving over a gap on the flyover.
TxDOT said the bridge joints, designed to expand and contract, have expanded beyond their intended limits. The agency said the issue does not pose a safety concern, and it has developed a repair plan after monitoring the joints and bearing pads for several years.
