Spring Break for Texas Tech University and many other major universities and ISDs in Texas is March 14 – 22, encompassing St. Patrick’s Day on Tuesday the 17th. Why It Matters: A Look At Recent History
Just last year, ” there were 700 DUI-alcohol-related traffic crashes in Texas, resulting in 36 fatalities and 63 serious injuries. What’s more, 51% of all alcohol-related crashes in Texas during the 2025 spring break holiday period involved young drivers (between the ages of 17–30),” according to a TXDOT press release. That’s nearly 100 Texans who were killed or severely hurt.
A Look At The Consequences, And The Alternatives
In addition to getting hurt, totaling your car or even dying, drunk driving comes with hefty costs. “Driving impaired and getting a DUI can result in time-consuming legal hassles, jail time, loss of your driver’s license, and fines and fees up to $17,000.” Not to mention any civil penalties you could incur as well.
There are plenty of other options available to you instead of driving drunk. Even if Uber or Lyft is experiencing surge pricing, it’s still much, much less than the cost of ruining your life. Or, plan ahead with a designated driver, stay with friends, or see what public transportation may be available (the City of Lubbock often offers vans/ buses during “drinking” holidays). You can always opt not to drink, enjoying mocktails, soda, or sparkling water. And if anyone gives you any trouble for not drinking, let me know, and I will personally bully them.
