Texas State men’s basketball head coach Terrence Johnson will return for the 2026-27 season, athletic director Don Coryell confirmed to the American-Statesman. The Bobcats went 19-13 in the 2025-26 season, winning eight of their final 10 games and tying for second place in the Sun Belt.

Johnson has coached the Bobcats for six seasons, taking over for former head coach Danny Kaspar before the 2020-21 season and guiding them to back-to-back regular-season Sun Belt titles.

Texas State is preparing for its Pac-12 debut. The conference will host powerhouse men’s basketball programs such as Gonzaga, San Diego State, Utah State and Colorado State, and Johnson has been frank about the challenges the Bobcats will face.

“This is one of the largest leaps in modern-day realignment,” Johnson said.

Regardless, Johnson said after Texas State’s win over App State that he believes university president Kelly Damphousse and athletic director Don Coryell are “willing to figure out what they can do” to help the program compete financially.

Under Johnson’s guidance, Texas State landed commitments from DJ Hall and Robert Fields in 2025, the two highest-rated recruits in program history, according to 247Sports. Johnson found Hall early in his prep career at Plano East High School, handing the then-sophomore his first college offer. Hall broke the all-time scoring record for a Texas State freshman, averaging 15.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He was selected as the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and named to the All-Sun Belt Second Team for his achievements.
