UNO saw its season come to an end in the Southland Conference Tournament quarterfinals against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday.
After trailing by as much as 16 points in the first half, UNO was up by two with 13:06 to go in the game after a Coleton Benson 3-pointer. But Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got the lead back less than one minute later and led the rest of the way in a 74-61 win at Townsley Law Arena in Lake Charles.
No. 5-seeded UNO finishes with a 15-18 record, an 11-win improvement from last season. The Privateers defeated No. 8-seeded Houston Christian on Sunday but couldn’t get past No. 4-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Guard Daniel Michelini-Jackson scored a career-high 28 points for the Islanders, shooting 10 of 12 from the field and making all five of his 3-point attempts. He also led the Islanders (18-14) in rebounding with eight.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi outrebounded UNO 41-29, a stark contrast from Sunday when UNO outrebounded HCU by double digits. Forward MJ Thomas was the only UNO player to record more than six rebounds.
Thomas had a double-double for the second night in a row, finishing with 14 rebounds and tied Benson as UNO’s top scorer with 17 points. Benson made a team-high three 3-pointers against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi but shot just 5 of 13 from the field.
Guard Jakevion Buckley was UNO’s second-leading scorer on the year but was held to just two points on Monday. Guard TJ Cope scored 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting, and center Churchill Abass had eight points with six rebounds.
UNO received only three points from its bench.
Monday was the third meeting between UNO and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this year. The teams split in the regular season, which included an 84-78 UNO overtime win on Feb. 9 at Lakefront Arena.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will face No. 1-seeded Stephen F. Austin in the first Southland semifinal matchup at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner advancing to Wednesday’s championship game.
The Southland championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday. The winner advances to the NCAA Tournament.
