HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A suspect accused of sexual assault is now dead after being shot by officers in southeast Houston on Monday afternoon, according to the Houston Police Department.
According to HPD, officers responded to a shooting at 10:29 am. in the 6000 block of Belarbor Street.
HPD said that the attorney general’s office and Precinct 7 officials were conducting a warrant service for a parole violation.
HPD officers initiated SWAT activation for an armed suspect accused of sexual assault, who was barricaded inside a home, according to preliminary information police released.
HPD said that a negotiator from the attorney general’s office talked to the suspect for 1.5 hours.
At around 12:30 p.m., the suspect exited his residence with a high-powered rifle and opened fire on SWAT officers, HPD said.
Officials said that a SWAT officer, who is a 16-year veteran with the department, fired towards the suspect. The officer was not injured, police said.
The suspect was identified as a 36-year-old Black man and was pronounced dead by HFD paramedics, according to HPD.
The scene is currently still under investigation, authorities said.
