The Dallas Cowboys went after two levels of their defense on the opening day of free agency negotiations.

A few hours after putting together a trade with Green Bay to acquire edge rusher Rashan Gary, the Cowboys came to terms on an agreement with free agent safety Jalen Thompson, two people familiar with the move confirmed to The Dallas Morning News.

The contract will be worth $33 million over three years, according to ESPN.

Thompson, 27, spent the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals. He recorded 95 tackles in 15 games last season.

New Cowboys cornerbacks coach Ryan Smith worked with Thompson in Arizona. There’s familiarity there, but there’s also intriguing talent with Thompson. Thompson has the versatility to play safety while also playing star in defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s defense.
