Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater may have a new artistic director — former company member Alicia Graf Mack — but half of the legendary troupe’s Dallas program will be familiar. Two of the four works on the bill have been performed in past appearances presented by TITAS/Dance Unbound.
Mack left her job as dean of the dance division at the Juilliard School last year to become only the fourth leader in the Ailey company’s 68-year run.
Of course, the founder’s signature African American history piece Revelations, the most seen work in dance history, is on tap. Also returning is Ronald K. Brown’s Grace, which depicts a journey to the promised land using modern and West African dance idioms.
Former Ailey artistic director Judith Jamison’s emotionally intense A Case of You, set to Diana Krall’s sultry version of the Joni Mitchell tune, was supposed to be performed in March 2020. The shows were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
News Roundups
The duet will finally make it to Dallas alongside Ballet BC artistic director Medhi Walerski’s Blink of an Eye, which was added to the Ailey repertory last year. Originally created for Nederlands Dans Theater, it examines the creative process to a suite of Bach violin sonatas and partitas.
