We’re all set for semifinal action in the Southland tournament on Tuesday night, and in the first of the two games, the top-seed in the field looks to get one step closer to an NCAA tournament bid.
The No. 1-seeded Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (27-4, 20-2 Southland) is set to make its postseason debut as it faces the No. 4-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (18-14, 13-9 Southland). The Islanders took care of business in their opener, beating No. 5-seeded New Orleans by 13. Now, they’ll try to knock off the tournament favorite.

The Lumberjacks have been one of the best mid-major teams in the country this season, and they rank as a top 100 team in the predictives as a result. They’re a top 100 team in both offensive and defensive efficiency, as well, and this figures to be a fairly low-scoring game against another solid mid-major defense.
SFA certainly has more star power, led by guard Keon Thompson, but it is a bit of a small lineup compared to the Islanders. Still, that hasn’t stopped the Lumberjacks from being one of the better mid-major rebounding teams this year, particularly on the offensive boards.
The Jacks won twice against TAMU-CC this year in the regular season, by nine and 10 points, respectively. I expect something similar here.
