Just in time for the International Day of Happiness on March 20, the results are in: Plano is officially a happy place to be. According to a new 2026 report from the personal-finance experts at WalletHub, Plano has secured the 16th spot in the ranking of the Happiest Cities in America.

The study, which evaluated 182 of the largest U.S. cities, used 29 key indicators to measure where Americans enjoy the best mental and physical well-being. For Plano, the 2026 ranking marks a steady climb toward the top, continuing a three-year upward trend in local life satisfaction.

Growth In Joy

Plano’s ascent in the happiness rankings has been notable. In 2024, the city sat at a respectable 35th place. By 2025, it jumped nearly twenty spots to rank 17th. This year’s move to 16th overall suggests that the city is successfully maintaining the conditions — from economic stability to community environment — that foster a positive lifestyle for its residents.

Breaking Down The Data

WalletHub’s researchers analyzed cities across three primary dimensions: emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, as well as community and environment. Each city was graded on a 100-point scale across metrics ranging from leisure time to income growth.

While Plano’s overall rank is 16th, a closer look at the specific data points reveals where the city truly shines, and where there is room for a little more sunshine:

Strong Foundations: Plano ranked an impressive 9th for separation and divorce rate, indicating strong community and family stability.
Active Lifestyle: The city took 28th place for sports-participation rate, highlighting a population that stays active.
Mental and Physical Health: Plano ranked 44th for depression rate and 51st for adequate sleep rate, both of which sit comfortably in the top third of the study.
Economic Health: The city ranked 81st for unemployment rate, showing a stable, if average, labor market compared to other major hubs.

The Science Of A Happy City

To determine these rankings, WalletHub didn’t just look at smiles; they looked at the “bones of a city. The 29 metrics included everything from depression rates to average daily leisure time. By calculating a weighted average across all these categories, the study provides a holistic view of which municipalities offer the best pursuit of happiness.
