Under normal conditions, travelling along Houston’s roads and highways can be…challenging. Now imagine that same commute, but on horseback, or with a team of mules pulling a covered wagon.

That’s what happens, of course, each year, as trail riders come into the city ahead of each Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

In the audio above, Houston Matters producer Michael Hagerty catches up with one of the oldest trail ride groups taking part this year: the Valley Lodge Trail Ride Association, which has been riding to the rodeo since 1959.
