Lubbock, Texas – Drivers across the South Plains could encounter sudden severe storms Tuesday afternoon as a volatile weather pattern develops west of the Caprock, bringing the risk of large hail and wind gusts strong enough to damage power lines.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk covers much of the region from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening. Storms developing west of the Caprock are expected to move east across the South Plains with wind gusts potentially reaching 60 to 70 mph and hail possibly exceeding one inch in diameter.

Communities including Lubbock, Plainview, Morton, Littlefield, Brownfield and Post sit within the zone where storms could intensify quickly. The strongest cells may produce isolated tornado spin-ups as they track across the open plains during the late afternoon and early evening commute. Travel along U.S. 84, Interstate 27 and U.S. 62/82 could become hazardous as intense bursts of rain and wind sweep through.
Emergency managers advise residents to secure outdoor items, park vehicles under shelter to avoid hail damage and keep weather alerts enabled on mobile devices in case warnings are issued.
Storm activity should weaken later Tuesday night as instability decreases, though additional updates or warnings could be issued if stronger storms organize across the South Plains during the evening hours.
