Lately my Monday nights at home have been dedicated to tuning in to American Idol to cheer on El Paso’s Julian Kalel and every episode I find myself ugly crying at all the amazing performances!!
Julian continues to make the Borderland proud as his journey on American Idol reaches another exciting milestone. The local singer first captured viewers’ attention during his audition when he opened up about his mental health journey and performed alongside his sister. Since then, Julian has continued to impress the judges with both his talent and his vulnerability, advancing through the competition and representing El Paso on one of television’s biggest stages.
This week, Julian faced another major moment on the show during American Idol’s Ohana Night, which took place in Hawaii. Contestants had one goal: secure a spot in the Top 20, which would send them to the live results shows where America would begin voting.

For the performance, Julian chose to sing an original song titled “Surrender.” The emotional song held special meaning for him, as he dedicated it to his dad. Julian performed the piece while playing guitar, joined on stage by his sister, who accompanied him on the violin.
As the two siblings performed together, cameras captured their dad in the audience, smiling proudly as he watched his children share such a meaningful moment on stage.
Julian explained that the song was inspired by his mental health journey and the support he received from his father during some of his darkest times.
Julian mentioned that through his darkest moments, it was his dad who reminded him to never give up and to keep going. “He literally told me to surrender myself,” Julian shared.
The song serves as a message about mental health awareness and learning to surrender fear while navigating anxiety. The powerful performance paid off because Julian secured his spot in the Top 20.

Next week, Julian will move on to the live shows, where contestants will begin competing for America’s vote, meaning fans will have the chance to help keep him in the competition.
