The Ravens say they backed out of the Crosby trade over a failed medical exam, paving the way for the Texas native to potentially join the Dallas Cowboys.

DALLAS — In a shocking development Tuesday night, the Baltimore Ravens reportedly backed out of the trade agreement with the Las Vegas Raiders for defensive end Maxx Crosby.

With the new opening, it would allow the Dallas Cowboys to swoop in and trade for Crosby, who is a native of North Texas. The Ravens initially agreed to a deal sending two first-round picks to Las Vegas, besting the offer from the Cowboys, which was reportedly a first-round and second-round pick, as well as defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Crosby did not pass his medical examination with Baltimore, who were reportedly concerned about his right knee after the pass rusher got meniscus surgery. Each team uses their own medical experts to determine a player’s health, so just because Crosby failed a physical with the Ravens doesn’t necessarily mean he would fail with another team. It’s all about each team’s comfortability on risk assessment.

Crosby grew up in Colleyville, and went to Colleyville Heritage High School. He played college ball at Eastern Michigan and was a fourth round pick by the Raiders. In seven NFL seasons, Crosby has been named Second-Team All-Pro twice (2021, 2023), Pro Bowl five times (2021-2025) and has become one of the most dangerous pass rushers in the league.

According to ESPN Senior Insider Adam Schefter, the Ravens have a history of rescinding deals in the past because of issues with physicals, including for a Cowboys player once. Schefter said, in 1997, Baltimore backed out of a deal with Cowboys safety Brock Marion minutes before he was going to sign a contract because the team discovered a potential problem with his left shoulder.

In the hours after the Ravens backed out of the deal, The Athletic Senior NFL Insider Diana Russini reported that the Cowboys were not expected to re-engage in trade discussions for Crosby. NFL Network’s Jane Slater corroborated that report, replying “Can confirm. A team source tells me “we moved on with Rashan Gary, etc”
