Two decades-long San Antonio traditions will be on hiatus this year. Alamo Heights Night during Fiesta and the Cesar E. Chavez March scheduled for later this month. Christina Balli, the executive director of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center says they do not know why the Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice was cancelled, but they’re disappointed.
“We know that we still need to create a march,” Balli said. “The struggle for justice continues.”
Balli says the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is working with several organizations to map out a plan for the march to happen.
“Several organizations, several civic organizations, and activism organizations, all of us are having the initial brainstorm of what we can do,” Balli said. “We likely won’t do a march on the date that is march was scheduled, but we are already talking about planning the march.”
In a statement, the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy and Educational Foundation said the March was cancelled due to a sensitive matter.
The Alamo Heights Rotary Club told us in a statement they’re pausing their Fiesta event Alamo Heights Night due to financial reasons. The club’s president says they tried to raise money throughout the year, but they ultimately fell short.
They hope to continue their annual party with a purpose next year.
