The sides of Interstate 30 will soon be budding with bluebonnets, daisies and thistles once again.

Kyle Cheesborough, the Director of Gardens at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, told the Star-Telegram that wildflower season is dependent on a region’s climate. This year, he predicts a moderate wildflower season due to low precipitation. 2026 will be no “superbloom.”

The good news? If Texas has a wet spring, then wildflowers could power through to more abundant blooms in the summer.

Due to the state-wide droughts, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center named the Carolina jessamine as the flower of 2026. It’s not picky about its soil and can grow in rain or shine.

This bright yellow wildflower has trumpet shaped leaves with evergreen vines.

Carolina jessamine blooms before spring, which makes it useful for early pollinators. It’s also a good pick to grow in your garden as deer avoid it, and it can climb a trellis.
