Texas A&M cruised to an early release victory against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in a 14-1, 7-inning game.

In baseball, when it rains, it pours, and it poured for SFA in the first and sixth innings. After leading the game with two singles, SFA left both runners on base in the top of the first inning. The Aggies came back with a three-run bottom of the first, with Gavin Grahovac being the hero of the moment. He batted in a run on a triple and was batted in himself the following at bat.

A&M starter Gavin Lyons recovered from his shaky first inning with two consecutive three up three down innings. In the top of the fourth, SFA first baseman Mark Henning hit a solo homer to give the Lumberjacks their first and only run of the night. Aggies pitcher Ethan Darden refused to allow a runner on base after coming in for Lyons in the fifth.

The game broke loose in the sixth inning. Leading 4-1, the Aggies poured on for 10 more runs. Terrence Kiel II started the action with an RBI groundout, batting Nico Partida in. SFA intentionally walked Caden Sorrell, then unintentionally walked Grahovac to allow Bear Harrison home.

Jake Duer then hit a single up the middle that allowed Sorrell and Sawyer Farr home, bringing the score to 8-1. SFA pitcher Hayden Tronson inherited a loaded basepath when he entered before Kiel’s groundout, then proceeded to give up four runs, a hit, and three walks during just 0.1 innings. That will hurt his ERA.

Gage Elliot entered the game when Tronson was pulled, inheriting a loaded basepath with just one out. Matters only got worse under Elliot’s tutelage, as the Lumberjack allowed another three earned runs and three hits while failing to retire a single batter.

First, Partida singled, bringing Duer and Grahovac home. Binderup followed this with a three-run homer, batting in Partida and Boston Kellner. Harrison followed this with a second homer, a solo shot that brought the lead to 14-1.

With a 13-run lead in the top of the seventh, the Aggies played conservatively. They put Austin Vargas on the mound, who allowed just a walk in 0.2 innings. For the final out, manager Mike Earley subbed Clayton Freshcorn, who forced a lineout on his only at-bat.

The 22nd-ranked Aggies head into conference play on Friday, facing the ninth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners in the SEC opening weekend. Texas A&M has dropped just one game to the top-ranked UCLA Bruins, and this dominant performance against inferior competition was just the performance fans needed to see heading into a brutal conference schedule.
