Whenever friends and family visit Austin for the first time, the first question that comes up almost immediately is “So, what should we do while we’re here?” I always laugh a little, not because the question is silly, but because Austin is the kind of city where almost any answer feels like the right one.

Luckily, the challenge isn’t finding enough things to do. Austin is a city where outdoor activities, music venues and events, and fabulous restaurants all compete for attention. The real challenge is finding the activities that best encapsulate the Austin vibe in a single day.

So, if you only have one day to show visitors around, here’s the perfect way to experience Austin from morning to night!

The morning is the perfect time to show visitors the version of Austin that locals actually love: outdoorsy and full of small pleasures.

For the friend who wants to do something right away, start by heading to the Colorado River for a paddle boarding session. The water is calm in the morning as you get to glide past skyline views and watch the city wake up around you. It’s the perfect active start to set the tone for the rest of the day without being exhausting.

If your visitor prefers more of a laidback start, the trail around Ladybird Lake is a classic. By sunrise, the trail is already dotted with joggers, bicyclists, and dog-walkers, but it doesn’t feel crowded. The Ladybird Lake Trail winds through some of the most scenic downtown views and offers some of the best people-watching in the city.

Once you’ve wrapped up your walk or paddle boarding session, stop by one of the downtown coffee shops for an energizing pick-me-up. Mañana is one of my personal favorites with its wide variety of seasonal coffees, matchas, smoothies, and snacks.

It’s time to lean into one of Austin’s most iconic and genuinely fun experiences – South Congress. This stretch of the city blends old-school Austin charm with new boutiques and trendy shops. It’s touristy in the best way possible with its lively and colorful atmosphere full of little moments that make visitors fall for the city.

Start off at the top of the avenue and make your way south. The mix of the shops here is part of the charm! Trendy stores like Alo and Reformation sit alongside local boutiques where Austin-made jewelry, prints, and gifts offer a more personal take on the city’s creative scene.

The street offers plenty of class Austin shops too. Allen’s Boots is a rite of passage with its towering rows of traditional leather boots. Murals and street art pop up between store fronts, offering quick photo ops and a sense of the playful spirit that makes South Congress feel unmistakably Austin. By the time you finish your South Congress stroll, you will have experienced one of the most iconic slices of Austin life.

After you’ve wandered your way down South Congress, you’ll be ready for lunch. This stretch of the city makes choosing almost impossible in the best way. The food scene here includes a mix of long-time staples, popular new restaurants, and casual spots where you can grab something quick and keep exploring.

First up, Homeslice Pizza is a South Congress classic with big, New York style slices for a quick and easy lunch. It’s also perfect for groups as the whole pies are a crowd pleaser and the patios are great for people watching.

If you’re in the mood for something more elegant and upscale, Aba is the place to go. Their whipped feta is a signature favorite. Reservations here are strongly recommended as this Instagrammable Mediterranean hot spot fills up quickly, especially on the weekends.

South Congress also always has a rotating lineup of food trucks offering tacos, bowls, and snacks. This is a great option if you want something fast and local without committing to a sit down restaurant. After a full morning outdoors and a lively stroll through South Congress, the afternoon is the perfect time to dial things back and slip into one of Austin’s most beloved spring/summertime activities: cooling off in the water.

The Barton Springs Pool is the perfect reset button on a warm day as the water stays consistently at a brisk 68-70 degrees year-round. The grassy hillsides are perfect for lounging and the mix of families, students, and regulars who treat it like a second home give it a relaxed and communal feel.

If swimming isn’t the vibe, Zilker Park offers just as much charm! Spread out a blanket and sit under a shady tree to take in the skyline views. It’s one of the easiest and best ways to show visitors the naturesque side of Austin.

If you prefer something more lowkey, the afternoon is also an ideal time to explore a local brewery or café. The Cosmic Coffee and Beer Garden is an easy favorite and a great place to wind down with its shaded areas.

Dinner is where Austin’s dining scene really comes alive. Restaurants here offer totally different dining experiences, but all feel distinctly Austin in their own way.

Yamas is a bright, modern Greek taverna with a lively and energetic atmosphere that feels like a little escape. The mezze plates are perfect for sharing and the seafood is some of the best in the city.

Sammie’s Italian is a retro spot that feels nostalgic with cozy booths and dim lighting as it’s inspired by legendary old-school restaurants. Visitors will love it since it’s indulgent, fun and unlike any other place in Austin.

Birdie’s, a nationally recognized favorite, blends fine dining with a casual feel that keeps the vibe relaxed and welcoming. It’s popular for its frequently-changing menu that is inspired by various European cuisines.

If you want to give visitors a fun, unique, and undeniably Austin experience, a mix of iconic rooftops and nightlife spots is the way to go.

Zanzibar is one of Austin’s most popular rooftops with its tropical cocktails, decorative greenery, and panoramic views that make the place feel like a getaway above the city. It’s lively without being too chaotic and is the perfect place for easing into the night.

Nido is also a great spot that sits above South Congress with sweeping skyline views. You can have a refined dinner or a classy cocktail here while taking in the city lights from one of the best vantage points in Austin.

Postino is one of my personal favorites and works as the perfect wind-down stop in an Austin evening. The wine café is known for its customizable, shareable boards that can be sweet, savory, or somewhere in between depending on the group. It’s an excellent spot to share a board and a bottle of wine with friends as the night winds down.

One day in Austin will never feel like enough, but this itinerary captures the heart of the city in a way that leaves visitors wanting more, and that’s the magic of Austin. There’s always another trail to walk or another restaurant to try as the city invites you to slow down, explore, and enjoy the little moments. Whether your visitors are here for the food, the music, or simply the vibe, they’ll leave with a clearer picture of why Austin is a place people fall for fast and return to often.
