Texas Man Arrested at Miami International Airport
Tiernan was not traveling with a small amount of marijuana as 75 pounds of marijuana was found in his luggage. He had checked two suitcases for his flight on British Airways. Authorities say they found a total of 65 vacuum-sealed packages that were later confirmed to be marijuana.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stopped Tiernan as he was attempting to board the flight, and he acknowledged that the two checked bags belonged to him.
CBP was conducting inspections at Miami International Airport due to a “high trend of narcotics being smuggled outbound from the USA.”
Authorities Find 75 Pounds of Marijuana in Suitcases
The total amount of marijuana seized from Tiernan’s luggage was 74.98 pounds. U.S. Homeland Security was notified, but they declined the case because the amount did not meet the federal threshold for prosecution. That is when the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office was notified and they became the lead agency for this case.
Tiernan was booked into jail and had his first appearance already where a judge set his bond at $20,000 and will be required to wear a GPS monitoring device if he posts bond.
Traveling with marijuana or any other drugs is illegal and anyone caught attempting to travel with drugs will face serious consequences.
