Plano-born guitarist Anson Funderburgh was a staple of the Dallas club scene starting in the late ’70s. But he scaled back his live shows after longtime singer Sam Myers died in 2006 and Funderburgh dealt with his own health problems.

Now 71, Funderburgh still rocks a pompadour — albeit smaller and streaked with silver — that once inspired former bandmate Mike Judge to sketch Beavis. What hasn’t changed is his sharp, stinging guitar work. Just ask ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons: “His style enters that hallowed realm and lofty regions where the great American art form called the blues goes to another level,” Gibbons told Guitar Player in 2021 after watching him perform in Austin.

On March 21, Funderburgh will perform in Oak Cliff with the Texas Blues Guitar Summit, the name of his recurring shows with two other local six-string guitar masters: Shawn Pittman, just back from a tour of Europe, and Mike Morgan, best known for his soulful string of albums for Black Top Records in the ’90s.
