Beeville Jones turned in a strong showing at the CBCA Meet of Champions on March 6 in Corpus Christi, led by a pair of event titles and another runner-up finish against a loaded field.
Brian Rivas Jr. won the boys 400-meter dash for the Trojans in 49.34 seconds, outpacing Corpus Christi Flour Bluff’s Michael Castillo, who was second in 50.07. Rivas’ victory came in one of the meet’s deeper sprint fields and gave Beeville Jones one of its top highlights of the day.
Gabe Luke added another championship for the Trojans in the boys triple jump, taking first with a leap of 42 feet, 7 inches. Luke edged Gregory-Portland’s Cohen Bartee, who was second at 42-6, and Corpus Christi King’s Damon Smith, who also reached 42-6.
Beeville Jones also picked up a silver-medal performance from Brayden Martorell in the boys 110-meter hurdles. Martorell finished second in 14.90, just behind Corpus Christi Flour Bluff’s Mykah Jaimes, who won in 14.79. Goliad’s Landon Psencik and Alice’s Hayden Trejo tied for third at 15.03.
In the field events, Niel Botello placed ninth for the Trojans in the boys discus with a throw of 123-9, while Roman Caballero finished 11th in the boys shot put at 43-10.
On the girls side, Ambrye Cortez represented Beeville Jones in two events. She placed 12th in the 100-meter dash in 13.72 seconds and added a ninth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 15-10.75.
The meet drew athletes from across the Coastal Bend and surrounding area, giving Beeville Jones a chance to measure itself against some of the region’s top competition ahead of the heart of track and field season. With Rivas and Luke both bringing home titles and Martorell adding a runner-up finish, the Trojans left Corpus Christi with momentum.
