NASHVILLE — Texas basketball opens the SEC Tournament with a first-round matchup Wednesday against Ole Miss at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. and the 10th- seeded Longhorns (18-13, 9-9 SEC) likely need a win to secure a trip in the NCAA Tournament that doesn’t include a detour to Dayton, Ohio, for the First Four.
But 15th-seeded Ole Miss (12-19, 4-14) needs to win out at the SEC Tournament if it want to reach the NCAA Tournament and salvage a miserable season under former Texas coach Chris Beard. The Rebels lost to Texas 79-68 a month ago in Austin when the Longhorns closed the game on a 14-0 run and got a huge game from post Matas Vokietaitis, who had 27 points on 9 of 11 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds.
