A pair of filmmakers with North Texas ties may walk away with an Academy Award this weekend.

Dallas-based Clint Bentley directed “Train Dreams” and also co-wrote the film with Fort Worth native Greg Kwedar. The film is up for four trophies at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 15.

“Train Dreams” is based on Denis Johnson’s 2011 novella of the same name and follows Robert Grainier, a fictional logger and railroad worker in the rapidly-changing America of the early 20th century.

Bentley and Kwedar are both nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, the duo’s second nomination in as many years after 2024’s “Sing Sing.” “Train Dreams” is also up for Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Original Song.

For anyone looking to catch up with “Train Dreams” ahead of Sunday’s Oscar broadcast, here’s what to know.

The film was produced independently and had its world debut at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January. Netflix acquired the film later that month and set a November release.

Before heading to Netflix, the film played in a limited number of theaters for two weeks beginning on Nov. 7. Then on Nov. 21, the film landed on the streaming service.

“Train Dreams” went back to theaters on March 1 at the Texas Theatre in Dallas. Bentley, who lives in Oak Cliff, stopped by for a post-screening Q&A at one of two showings and stuck around to introduce the film before the other.
