American Airlines is planning to revitalize its premium lounge product at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

This year, construction on a new, more than 12,000-square foot lounge will begin, the Fort Worth-based airline said Tuesday. The lounge will also include a feature not available at any other Admiral’s Club lounge: an outdoor terrace.

The lounge will provide travelers the chance to “enjoy expansive views of downtown Austin and the airfield, creating a uniquely local and elevated atmosphere for customers,” according to American.

American’s presence in Austin is significantly smaller than at its Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport hub, but it still operates nearly 50 daily flights to 11 destinations, it said. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is also a major player at the airport, with the carrier planning to open a crew base there this month.

American said its current Admirals Club at the airport will remain open during construction. The new lounge will have “distinct zones, including areas to relax, dine, work and recharge,” the airline said.

“As we elevate our presence in Austin, we’re excited to bring a new level of comfort and hospitality to our customers,” American’s chief customer officer Heather Garboden said in a statement.

“This new Admirals Club lounge will reflect the vibrant spirit of Austin while offering the thoughtful design and premium amenities our customers expect.”

The investment at Austin comes as American focuses heavily on its premium offerings as it seeks to catch up to rivals United Airlines and Delta Air Lines in earnings. The airline also recently announced it is planning to open a new Admirals Club at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, where it is locked into a turf war with United.
