WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Rising gas prices aren’t just forcing people to rethink their budgets — they’re also pushing businesses and organizations to adapt.
Meals on Wheels Waco is one local nonprofit already bracing for the impact.
Fueling the nonprofit’s six delivery vehicles cost about 1,500 hundred dollars in January — and those vehicles get gas through a partnership with Waco Transit.
The volunteers who bring meals to doorsteps use their own cars — and pay for their own gas.
CEO Estrellita Doolin says drivers have stayed committed so far, and they’re hoping they won’t have to make changes.
“The increases in cost will affect us. I can tell you that we will do everything in our power to prevent us from delivering those meals because that’s our core business, that’s why we’re in existence, that’s what we do. As of today, we have not had to make any changes,” Doolin said.
As of Thursday morning, regular gas was sitting at about $3.20 cents in Waco.
