An East Texas hospital resumed normal operations after an evacuation when a patient escaped, according to the Palestine Police Department.

PALESTINE, Texas — An East Texas hospital is safe and has returned to normal operations after an escaped patient caused an evacuation Thursday morning.

According to the Palestine Police Department, officers were called to Palestine Regional West Campus around 10:15 a.m. about a male patient who had escaped from the mental health unit. He was in the facility on an emergency detention warrant.

Officers were quickly able to detain the patient. A staff member reported this patient had a gun, but it was determined that patient had no weapons. 

During the search, the department used an active shooter protocol, which included evacuating all buildings. The patient was arrested on multiple charges and booked into the Anderson County Jail.

All hospital facilities have now returned to normal operations.
