Warm weather arrives quickly on the South Plains, and it does not usually take long before Lubbock sees its first 90-degree day of the year. Perhaps ironically, the last FREEZE of the year usually happens slightly before that each year.

Sometimes It Happens Much Earlier
Although late April is typical, Lubbock has occasionally reached 90 degrees far earlier in the year. In fact, the earliest 90-degree day on record happened last year on February 3, 2025, when temperatures reached 91 degrees at the airport. That record shattered the previous earliest occurrence and showed just how unpredictable West Texas weather can be.
It Could Happen This Week Or Next In Lubbock
This Saturday (3/14) the high is 89 degrees, so it is possible we could hit 90. Next week, multiple days starting Thursday are expected to go over 90. Therefore, it’s likely that we will not reach April without surpassing that heat milestone.

What To Expect This Spring
We can reasonably expect big temperature swings, so expect to leave your jacket in the car and to lose one plant to an unexpected cold snap. This is the time of year when it’s smart to check the weather daily, as who knows what’ll happen from one day to the next. At least we didn’t get a 90-degree day in February!
