Lubbock will test its tornado sirens Friday morning, and while that’s normally routine, it’s happening at a time when the world already feels a little on edge.

With headlines about tensions with Iran and security concerns surrounding major events like the Oscars, it’s understandable that some people might hear a siren and briefly wonder if something bigger is going on.

Don’t Panic: Lubbock Tornado Siren Test Scheduled for Friday

First things first: the City of Lubbock plans to test the tornado sirens at 9:30 a.m. Friday, and it’s just a test. There’s no emergency, no incoming storms, and definitely no reason to panic. Most folks in Lubbock will probably hear it and carry on with their morning, but it’s worth remembering that we’re living in a time where every day can feel like “Anything Can Happen Day.” If you hear someone at work or a friend on social media getting a little wound up about the sirens, it might not hurt to gently remind them that this one is completely routine.

As for the other worry floating around out there — the idea of drones coming all the way from Iran to the United States — experts say that’s extremely unlikely. Long-range drones capable of crossing the Pacific would need to be launched from something much closer, like a ship, and there’s no indication of anything like that happening.

And if you’re wondering about the distance from Tehran to Lubbock, let’s just say it’s very, very far away. Far enough that any drone making that trip would have much bigger problems than the citizens of West Texas.

So when those sirens sound Friday morning, remember what they’re really for. In Lubbock, the only thing we’re supposed to panic about is tornadoes — and even then, only when the weather actually turns nasty.

Until then, everything’s cool. Everything’s chill. At least for now.
