Dallas announced the official signings of safeties Jalen Thompson and P.J. Locke and quarterback Sam Howell on Thursday. The addition of Howell brought their number of quarterbacks on the roster to four, along with Dak Prescott and Joe Milton.
It’s now back down to three after the release of Grier, who’d been brought back after last season on a reserve/future contract.

Grier, 30, spent the entirety of last season on the Cowboys practice squad, his second stint with the team. He competed for the backup QB gig with Milton but was released by Dallas on the final day of roster cuts. He re-signed to the practice squad the next day.
Grier was originally a third-round selection by the Carolina Panthers in the 2019 NFL draft. He started two games at the end of the season for the 5-11 Panthers, the last time he’s taken the field in an NFL regular season game.
He spent the 2021 season behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush with the Cowboys, then bounced around to the Bengals, Patriots, Chargers and Eagles before returning to Dallas last season.
By adding Sam Howell, Dallas Cowboys put backup quarterback Joe Milton on notice
The NFL is about contingency plans. Would Howell be a stronger backup option behind Dak Prescott?
