Drivers along Woodrow Rd. welcome speed limit reduction after long-standing safety concerns

  • March 12, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – For people who travel Woodrow Rd. regularly, the county’s decision to lower the speed limit wasn’t surprising, it was overdue.

Lubbock County commissioners voted unanimously earlier this week to drop the limit from 65 mph to 45 mph between FM 179 south of Wolfforth and Lubbock-Cooper Liberty, citing growth, construction and increased traffic in the area.

Those who use the road daily say the concerns that prompted the change have been visible for some time.

“It is very scary especially because sometimes you know people get in a hurry and they don’t pay attention. They’re on their phones, distracted, talking to somebody and that’s a lot of what we get over here people just not paying attention and we have little ones we want to make sure our babies are safe and protected,” said Elizabeth Martinez, who works at Little Legacies Learning Center along Woodrow Road.

Martinez said the facility serves children as young as six weeks old, making the volume of distracted drivers along the road a daily concern for staff.

Other drivers who regularly travel the stretch say the road’s narrow lanes and uneven surface already made higher speeds feel uncomfortable.

“I’m for it I guess because people do go super fast and the roads a bit more narrow I guess and kind of bumpy. I feel like its fine,” Layney Vega, a driver who lives near the road, said.

Some residents say their bigger hope is that drivers actually follow the new limit.

“I hope citizens obey the speed limit. I don’t want the law out here all the time but I would love for people to obey the speed limits. Dogs run out in front of you and children run out in front of you. You never know,” another driver said.

The new 45 mph limit is already in effect. Updated signage is still pending, but county leaders are asking drivers to slow down now as the area continues to develop.
