Gas prices in North Texas have risen by almost 60 cents in the past week and nearly 90 cents in the past month as the U.S.-led military conflict with Iran continues to cause instability in energy markets.
Statewide, the average price of a regular gallon of gas was $3.26 on Thursday, up from $2.87 a week ago. But Fort Worth and Arlington drivers are paying more — an average of $3.46 per gallon, according to AAA Texas. If your vehicle requires premium, you’re paying around $4.22 per gallon.
Dallas pump prices are running a penny or two higher than Fort Worth, AAA data shows.
Crude oil prices play a large role in determining how much drivers will pay at the pump. Those prices have risen north of $100 per barrel multiple times in recent days as a result of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. The U.S. earlier this week announced it would release 172 million barrels of oil form its strategic reserves over the next four months to help offset energy prices.
The move comes as the International Energy Agency is also releasing a total of 400 million barrels of oil, which is the largest emergency release in the agency’s history.
The International Energy Agency earlier this week redetermined its original forecast for oil-supply growth for 2026, saying the war has caused “the biggest disruption of global energy markets ever.”
The market instability comes at a time when gasoline prices were already expected to rise going into spring, when travel demand surges, according to AAA.
Diesel prices in Fort Worth and Texas have also risen in recent days. The average price of diesel in Texas is currently an average of $4.57 per gallon. Last week, diesel was 75 cents cheaper at $3.82. Diesel fuel is now $1.33 more expensive per gallon than a month ago.
Looking back one year ago, Fort Worth gas stations in March 2025 were selling regular gas for $2.74 a gallon, which is about 71 cents cheaper than today.
As much as gas prices rose this week, we’re still a long ways from breaking any records. Fort Worth’s gas prices would need to climb another $1.38 to reach the record set on June 16, 2022, of $4.84 per gallon.
