St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, so if you’re behind on laundry you might want to wash something green. The holiday hits Tuesday, and while people may not be pinching each other for skipping the green outfit anymore, you’ll still get asked about it all day if you show up wearing anything else.

But here’s something surprising: Lubbock actually ranks pretty well when it comes to celebrating the holiday.

A new study from WalletHub looked at the Best Cities for St. Patrick’s Day, comparing 200 cities across the United States. The rankings were based on four main categories: St. Patrick’s Day traditions, cost, safety and accessibility, and weather.

Lubbock landed at No. 53 overall, which may not sound amazing at first glance — until you remember there were 200 cities in the study. That puts the Hub City solidly in the upper tier for celebrating the Irish holiday.

Why Lubbock Ranks Higher Than You’d Expect For St. Pat’s

So what exactly pushed Lubbock up the list?

The big factor was cost.

Lubbock ranked No. 18 in the nation for affordability, meaning things like drinks, meals, and going out on St. Patrick’s Day are relatively cheap compared to many other cities. That strong score helped offset lower rankings in some of the other categories.

In other words, Lubbock might not be overflowing with massive parades or historic Irish traditions, but it does have something pretty important when it comes to a good celebration: affordable fun.

So maybe Lubbock doesn’t have giant shamrock-covered floats rolling down Broadway. Maybe four-leaf clovers aren’t growing on every corner.

But what we do have is plenty of places willing to pour a cheap pint and even dye it green for the occasion.

And honestly, that might be the most important St. Patrick’s Day tradition of all.

So break out the green shirt, grab a drink with friends, and enjoy knowing that when it comes to celebrating the holiday, Lubbock has more luck than you might think.
