Near-record heat followed by a crash in temperatures this weekend

  • March 13, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Friday will be calm, quiet, and a little warmer than yesterday. Skies stay mostly sunny with highs in the low 80s.

Expect a brief period of breezy northeast wind early this afternoon but will relax later this evening.

This weekend will bring a mixed bag with exceptionally warm temperatures Saturday followed by a crash in temperatures and potential wind event on Sunday.

However, Sunday’s winds really start with Saturday’s heat. Expect record highs as temperatures climb to near 90s across the South Plains.

Temperatures will crash SundayTemperatures will crash Sunday(KCBD)

When the air gets that warm, it becomes lighter and expands, which helps create low pressure at the surface.

Late Saturday night into Sunday morning, a strong cold front will push south through our area causing a big pressure difference that the atmosphere will try and balance out.

Temperatures crash from near 90 on Saturday to highs in the 50s Sunday

That rapidly cooling air means air density changes quickly. Cold air is denser and heavier than warm air. As that cold front pushes south, the pressure behind it rises and air rushes in to fill that space. That movement is wind.

But there’s another piece of the forecast that will really crank up the knob on Sunday’s wind.

Upcoming weather patternUpcoming weather pattern(KCBD)

A storm system will be developing over the Rockies on Saturday, then race toward Illinois on Sunday. That will act like a vacuum cleaner pulling air towards it.

These two forces working together are why we can expect very strong winds on Sunday.

N 30-40 mph and gusts possibly approaching 60 mph.

We haven’t seen much rain across the area, soils are dry, and expect lots of dust and high fire danger. Winds decrease Sunday night and Monday morning we’ll wake up to temperatures in the teens and 20s.

To recap, we’re going from the 80/90s on Saturday to teens Monday morning.

Next week will start calm and cool but a warm pattern builds back mid-week.
