EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — An El Paso police officer was injured and taken to a hospital after being assaulted while investigating a reported theft at Cielo Vista Mall on Thursday.

The officer, a seven-year veteran of the El Paso Police Department, was alerted by a mall employee about two suspects who had committed a theft.

When the officer attempted to detain them, both suspects resisted and assaulted the officer during a struggle, according to police.

Additional officers responded and took both suspects into custody.

The officer sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

One of the suspects was identified as Madelyn De La Rosa, a 17-year-old girl booked on a robbery charge.

Her bond was set at $3,000.

A 15-year-old girl was also arrested.

She faces charges of theft of property valued at more than $100 but less than $750, evading arrest or detention, interference with public duties and assault of a public servant.
