Very windy day in store

  • March 14, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Springtime is in full swing with cold fronts and the typical strong winds hanging around. Our weather pattern is ripe to create dangerous fire weather conditions at times this weekend.

TONIGHT

Not much to write home about tonight. Quiet.

Mild weather remains overnight and heading into Saturday.Mild weather remains overnight and heading into Saturday.(Dylan Smith)

Overnight lows drop into the low to mid 40s for most of the area with light winds around 5 to 10 mph. Mostly clear skies remain throughout.

SATURDAY

Record setting temperatures, or very close to records, are expected for the afternoon. Lubbock’s current record is 86 degrees, and with a forecast of 88 degrees for the day I expect to see many area records broken or challenged.

A windy and possibly record hot Saturday is in store for the South PlainsA windy and possibly record hot Saturday is in store for the South Plains(Dylan Smith)

This record heat will also be paired with more strong and dry winds out of the west. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts generally reaching 35 to 40 mph will create elevated fire weather danger for a large portion of the area.

Winds will be strong this weekend, primarily on Sunday.Winds will be strong this weekend, primarily on Sunday.(Dylan Smith)

SUNDAY

This is the problem child of the forecast period. High temperatures will peak likely in the morning for most of us. A cold front arrives mid-day for the South Plains. This will bring with it much colder air, plummeting temperatures from the 60s and lower 70s into the 50s and 40s in just a few hours heading into the afternoon.

This colder air will be ushered in by very strong winds. I anticipate seeing sustained winds in the 30 to 40 mph range and gusts eclipsing 50 mph, likely reaching close to 60 mph at times.

High winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts of more than 50 mph are expected throughout SundayHigh winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts of more than 50 mph are expected throughout Sunday(Dylan Smith)

This is prime critical to extreme fire danger even with dropping temperatures thanks to dewpoints dropping into the single digits and even into the negative degree territory.

FUTURE WEATHER PATTERN

Next week starts out cold with 20s for Monday morning and only 50s for Monday afternoon. This is a short-lived cold snap.

A strong high pressure ridge sets up to our west, allowing for a rapid warm up Tuesday and then helping to set up a situation where we could be setting several record high temperatures heading into the later parts of next week and weekend. High temps will likely jump into the 90s by then.
