Texas A&M baseball has not failed to provide the drama yet this year, and that trend continued today during their 9-5 win over the ninth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. The Aggies needed something good to happen in a big way today, as the loss of relief pitcher Josh Stewart to injury last game was hanging over the team like a pall.
Something good is exactly what they got, though it was the Sooners that struck first. Caden Sorrell and Chris Hacopian both came up big for the Ags with home runs, though, eventually lifting Texas A&M to a four-run victory up in Norman.
Texas A&M baseball evens series with Oklahoma with resounding 9-5 win
Things looked pretty hairy for a moment, though. As Weston Moss’s pitch count climbed, the Aggies’ lead, then 6-2, dwindled to 6-4, and Michael Earley made the decision to pull him. The initial reliever was not effective, surrendering a run and loading the bases with nobody out— but then Clayton Freshcorn entered.
Freshcorn was unbelievable, getting out of that jam in a hurry without giving up any more runs. After the insurance in the next inning for the Aggies, the story of the game was all but written. Two more effective innings from Freshcorn meant Texas A&M had evened up the series.
Texas A&M will face back off with Oklahoma tomorrow at 2 PM, though many Aggie fans’ minds will be on the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, who will be debating Bucky McMillan’s squad’s fate at that point. Bringing home a series victory over the Sooners would be huge, however, as top-10 road series wins don’t exactly grow on trees in this sport— even in the SEC.
We’ll see if the Aggies can carry some momentum over from this game into next at that point. Texas A&M will need to bring their A-game to topple the Sooners tomorrow, but they closed this one in style.
