One person was critically injured and a driver faces charges after a chase ended in a crash early Saturday morning near the Fort Worth Zoo, police said.

Officers initially responded to reports of a disturbance between a man and woman in the 2800 block of Bledsoe Street in the West 7th entertainment district, according to a police statement. When officers tried to intervene, the man fled in a car, police said.

Officers pursued the driver, and the chase ended when the driver crashed in an S-curve near the entrance to the Fort Worth Zoo on South University Drive, officials said.

The Fort Worth Fire Department was called to the scene to help with extricating four people from the vehicle, according to the statement. At least one person was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

The driver, 21-year-old Joel Gandarilla, was hospitalized and faces a charge of evading detention with a vehicle, according to the Police Department’s online arrest records.

No further details were available Saturday night about the condition of the injured.
