LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Two students from South Plains schools, who won state championship medals in precision shooting, have their sights locked in on their next target – the Junior Olympics.
Senior Zach Odom from Wolfforth and sophomore Teagan Chatfield from Idalou both train with South Plains Precision Shooters, and Olympic sports club located in Lubbock. Both of them shot qualifying matches for the Junior Olympics in fall competitions, but had to wait for invitations to the J.O. program, sent out this month.
This will be Zach’s first appearance at the J.O. program, where he will use a .22 caliber single-shot rifle with peep sights, on an outside range, to shoot a target 55 inches from the ground, at 50 meters away. Zach was named the Overall Men’s champion for the State of Teas by the Texas State Rifle Association at its annual youth shoot.
Teagan has qualified for the J.O. before, and this will be her second time going. Last year, she shot in the smallbore rifle competition. This year, she’ll shoot in the standing-60 shot timed air rifle match. She’s no stranger to that competition; she took 6th place in the 4-H State Smallbore competition in Victoria, Texas, last June.
The Junior Olympics will be held in Talladega, Alabama, from April 8 to 13.
