SCHERTZ, Texas — As Texas families prepare for major changes in education funding and school choice, a San Antonio-area homeschooling mother is launching a new community event designed to connect parents with the resources they need.

Destiny Benson, a homeschooling mom and the wife of a San Antonio Police officer, is the Founder and CEO of the VENT EXPO (Voices in Education Networking for Tomorrow) — a first-of-its-kind event bringing together homeschool groups, micro-schools, co-ops, curriculum providers, and education support organizations under one roof.

The event will take place on April 10, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Schertz Civic Center, located at 1400 Schertz Parkway, Building 5.

Benson, who educates her own children at home while supporting her husband’s career in law enforcement, said the idea for the event grew from conversations with other parents searching for alternatives to traditional schooling.

“Families are asking more questions than ever about education,” Benson said. “As a homeschooling mom myself, I’ve seen how overwhelming it can be to find reliable resources and supportive communities. VENT EXPO is about bringing those connections together in one place so parents feel informed and empowered.”

The event comes at a pivotal time for Texas education following the passage of Senate Bill 2, which establishes Texas Educational Freedom Accounts (TEFA). The program, scheduled to begin in the 2026–27 school year, will provide state-funded education assistance for families pursuing alternative education options.

Under the new law:

Homeschool families may receive up to $2,000 per student annually to help cover curriculum, tutoring, educational materials, and approved learning programs.Families participating in the program may also use funds toward private school tuition and other education-related expenses, significantly expanding school choice options statewide.

VENT EXPO aims to help families understand and navigate these new opportunities.

The event will feature:

Local homeschool co-ops and micro-schoolsCurriculum providers and enrichment programsEducational support organizationsWorkshops and expert panels on navigating different education pathsResource booths for families exploring homeschooling or alternative education

Benson says the goal is not only to provide information, but also to build community among families exploring educational options.

“There are so many incredible resources in our area, but many families don’t know where to start,” she said. “VENT EXPO will create a hub where parents can meet educators, ask questions, and discover opportunities that could truly change their child’s educational experience.”

With education policy shifting statewide, Benson believes events like VENT EXPO are critical for helping families understand what options are available.

“This is a moment of transition in Texas education,” she said. “Parents deserve access to clear information and a supportive network as they explore what’s best for their children.”
