Hard freeze to kick off the second half of March

  • March 16, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – It’s been an extremely windy and dusty day across the South Plains after that cold arrived around mid-day for a lot of the area. The good news is I anticipate the winds to start easing up over the next several hours and into Monday.

TONIGHT

Temperatures will plummet into the teens and lower 20s for most of the area overnight and into Monday morning.

Winds will remain breezy and continue to ease up throughout the night and into the morning hours Monday.

MONDAY

After a frigid morning, temperatures will climb above freezing, just not by as much as we might be wanting.

High temperatures Monday afternoon could struggle to get past 50 degrees for most of the South Plains.

MONDAY NIGHT

A slight improvement to Sunday night as overnight lows get down closer to a light freeze around 30 degrees.

UPCOMING WEATHER PATTERN

Next week is shaping to be quite dynamic in the temperature ranges we’ll be experiencing. The lows tomorrow morning in the teens and lower 20s will give way to likely record highs in the low to mid 90s by the end of the week.

That’s all thanks to an upper level high pressure system that will set up to our west for a few days, giving us a bit of time the pressure cooker and allowing those temperatures to soar.
