A strong cold front brought in high winds and chilly temperatures.
DALLAS — North Texas saw dramatic weather changes Sunday and Monday as a powerful cold front swept through the region, bringing very strong winds and a sharp drop in temperatures.Â
The strong winds caused travel delays, road closures, and event disruptions. Wind gusts reached up to 60 mph in some areas.Â
Behind the weekend storm system, gusty north winds continued into Monday morning.Â
Wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph were common, with a few gusts approaching 40 mph before sunrise. Even as winds slowly ease during the day, sustained speeds around 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph will still be possible.Â
The strong winds may blow around unsecured outdoor items and could make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles.
It’s so windy in the Dallas–Fort Worth area mainly because a strong cold front moved through North Texas, creating a big pressure difference in the atmosphere.Â
That pressure difference accelerates the air, which produces strong winds. When a dry, cold air mass moves in while the temperatures in place are drastically warmer, winds accelerate at a faster rate.
The bigger the difference in temperatures ahead and behind the front, the stronger the wind gusts tend to be. Â
Here are a few of the max wind gusts on Sunday.
