A ton of people in Lubbock hit the same realization every year: Holy butts! It’s spring break, and we have nothing planned!
The good news is that some really quick getaway spots within a reasonable driving distance won’t cost you a fortune. If you need a last-minute trip that doesn’t involve spending a full day in the car, here are some ideas for you:
Ruidoso, New MexicoPhoto by LaDawn Preuninger on Unsplash
The drive time from Lubbock is only about 3.5 hours, and Ruidoso is a classic quick escape for the folks of West Texas. Mountains, cozy cabins, yummy restaurants, and great shopping. Plus, the weather is fantastic there this time of year. It’s the perfect option for anyone who wants their spring break trip to feel like a real escape and not just arduous hours spent in the car with screaming kiddos.

The drive time is a little longer, roughly 5 hours from Lubbock, but Santa Fe is spectacular. It’s packed with restaurants, galleries, unique stores, and incredible art. I highly recommend checking out Meow Wolf if you have the chance. 10/10 awesome.

This is the shortest of trips, only 3 hours of drive time, AND it’s my number 1 choice, especially if you have kids and you’ve never been. It’s SO much fun to explore the caverns! I went nearly every year with my parents when I was growing up and we had the opportunity to visit again a few months ago. It was just so nostalgic and awesome. It’s a great place for kids to learn, burn off energy, and see some really cool things they’ve never seen before.
