AUSTIN, Texas — It’s been more than two weeks since the deadly mass shooting on West Sixth Street near Buford’s Bar on March 1. Three people died and nineteen others were injured as a result of the gunman opening fire early that morning.
Today, downtown is expected to be busier than ever with St. Patrick’s Day festivities, the start of March Madness and the continuation of South by Southwest. City officials say they are working behind the scenes to keep downtown running safely and smoothly. One of those ways is the city’s Event Operations Center. That center has multiple departments working together to coordinate responses if something goes wrong. The center will remain open through tomorrow. Austin police say they will also have an increased presence around downtown.
