The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is reminding guests about updated rules as crowds continue to fill the grounds, including a revised dress code and a broader set of conduct policies aimed at keeping the event family-friendly and safe.

If you’re planning to attend, officials say it’s important to understand what’s allowed — and what could get you removed.

The announcement comes after several incidents over the weekend that forced the rodeo to close the carnival early on Saturday night. Videos circulating on social media show large groups fighting in the middle of a crowded carnival area, prompting some guests to run and creating confusion among families attending the event.

Rodeo officials say they have updated the dress code within their fan code of conduct as part of that effort.

“The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a family-friendly event, and we want every guest, especially young people, to have a safe and memorable experience,” the rodeo said in its announcement.

The updated policy is part of the rodeo’s official Guest Code of Conduct, which all attendees agree to when purchasing tickets online or at the gate.

According to the latest version of the policy, updated March 16, proper attire is required at all times, including shirts and appropriate footwear.

Officials say clothing considered inappropriate — including items with obscene language or graphics, excessively torn clothing, visible undergarments, or outfits that expose excessive portions of the body — may result in denied entry or removal.

The policy also prohibits clothing, tattoos, or accessories that display gang affiliation, as well as any apparel that intentionally obscures the face unless worn for religious, cultural, or medical reasons.

Beyond dress code updates, the rodeo outlines several other key rules designed to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.

Weapons of any kind — including firearms, knives longer than 5.5 inches, chemical agents like pepper spray, and stun guns — are not allowed on the grounds.

Alcohol, narcotics, and illegal substances are also prohibited, and anyone who appears intoxicated or under the influence may be denied entry or removed.

Other rules include no pets except service animals, no glass containers, and limits on mobility vehicles, which cannot exceed 5 mph.

Guests should also expect security screenings at entrances, and rodeo officials say they reserve the right to deny entry to certain bags or items.

The code of conduct also outlines prohibited behavior, including fighting, disruptive or threatening conduct, blocking walkways, and unauthorized selling or solicitation on the grounds.

Officials say even certain types of livestreaming or social media content could be restricted if deemed unsafe or disruptive to the event.

Violations of the code could result in removal from the rodeo without a refund.

Officials say the full Guest Code of Conduct is available online at RODEOHOUSTON.com under the “Guest Experience” section within “Plan Your Visit.”
