EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 62-year-old man was arrested in El Paso after deputies learned he had an active warrant for failing to pay child support and had missed a court hearing.

Deputies with the El Paso County Constable Office Precinct Three, led by Constable Hector Bernal, received information Tuesday about an active warrant for Benjamin Mata for criminal non-support.

The warrant carried a $2,000 bond.

Authorities said Mata failed to appear at a court hearing, disregarding the court’s child support orders.

Deputies went to the 200 block of Carnes, where Mata was taken into custody.

Officials said Mata owes more than $17,000 in child support.

Precinct Three deputies previously arrested Mata on Sept. 11, 2025, for the same charge.

Records also show prior arrests for criminal non-support on Jan. 24, 2013; March 24, 2015; and May 4, 2015.

Officials said Mata had previously communicated with a sergeant and expressed that he wished to turn himself in.

Bernal noted that criminal non-support warrants are often overlooked by law enforcement agencies and said his office will continue executing those warrants.

Tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers of El Paso at 915-566-TIPS (8477) or online. Information can also be submitted to the Precinct Three Office at 915-273-3590.
