A 28-year-old teacher and coach at Veterans Memorial High School died Friday after a two-car crash outside the Coastal Bend.

Corpus Christi Independent School District identified Leyton Hernandez, who was in his fifth year teaching and coaching multiple sports at the school. He is the son of Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez and Dr. Cynthia Hernandez, and the brother of Lauren Stinson.

The district said crisis counselors were available to students and staff when schools reopened Monday.

Hernandez graduated from King High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas State University in 2020, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, according to the district. The statement described him as an accomplished high school athlete and college football recruit.

Hernandez and his father had a nine-year tradition of attending the state football championship games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

“The Hernandez family appreciates the outpouring of condolences and warm memories as they begin to navigate this unimaginable loss. They thank the community for respecting their privacy during this difficult time.”

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Service, Yorktown, 5921 Yorktown Blvd. in Corpus Christi. A celebration of life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at Church Unlimited, 3402 Rodd Field Road in Corpus Christi.
