Warmer, breezy Tuesday brings elevated fire danger across the South Plains

  • March 17, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – South-southwest winds increased late Monday as a chilly high pressure system moved out.

Winds have turned breezy late Tuesday morning, especially off the Caprock, as a developing trough tightens the pressure gradient.

With plenty of sunshine, winds around 15 to 20 mph and very low humidity, temperatures will climb into the low to mid-70s areawide.

The combination of warm temperatures, dry air and gusty winds will raise fire danger through the afternoon. Humidity is expected to stay just above Red Flag Warning criteria, but the National Weather Service has issued a Rangeland Fire Danger Statement for much of the area today due to breezy southwest winds and low humidity.

Winds will ease after sunset Tuesday, then shift more westerly overnight. That shift will help keep Tuesday night lows about 10 degrees warmer than early Tuesday morning.

Looking ahead, record heat is possible later this week.
