Lubbock Parks and Recreation sports leagues offer community, competition and more

  • March 18, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department offers a range of sports leagues designed for residents of all skill levels, according to recreation coordinator Donavon Hailey.

Hailey said the leagues are open to anyone looking to get involved, regardless of experience.

“Recreation, you know, you give everybody a chance to come play, whether you are that kid that is not familiar with the game trying to learn the game, you get a chance to come love it or not, and then maybe you move on to another sport,” Hailey said. “I love what we do and I love the opportunities that we give because no kid, no person is ever on the sideline.”

Feedback from participants shapes programming

Hailey says these leagues were created for the community to enjoy.

With the department always aiming to make the experience better for everyone involved.

“Our community members are the heart and soul of what we do,” Hailey said. “If we program something they don’t like, I will get emails, I will get calls and that’s fine with me. I would rather have that feedback because I can put anything I want on the schedule, but what makes it special — what makes it special to Lubbock — is when I get that feedback from the participants.”

Department eyes growth, larger events

The department currently offers flag football, softball, pickleball, soccer and Volleyball.

Hailey said staff are working to expand offerings and attract larger events.

“We are taking steps with different governing bodies to host bigger events for our community, including the Taft State Youth Flag Football Tournament that is coming up,” Hailey said. “We are trying to bring more opportunities like that to grow sports around Lubbock, and as Lubbock grows, we hope to continue to grow in the sports area as well.”

Come join in on the fun

For those hesitant to join, Hailey offered a direct message.

“For anybody timid or just interested in doing it, I would say, hey, take the chance or lose the reward, because you never know what you are going to gain out of it,” Hailey said. “You can gain community, you might even get better at the sport. If you don’t, that’s okay — you still gave it your best shot. The community aspect, especially here in Lubbock, is what’s important.”
