LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A 13-year-old Seagraves teenager set a new auction record at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo after her grand champion market lamb sold for $1 million in the junior market lamb auction.
Reagan Miller, a member of the Denver City FFA, said the win felt like a major milestone.
“Just knowing that we won Houston sheep show is incredible,” Miller said. “It’s like winning the Super Bowl.”
Showing livestock runs in Miller’s family. Her parents showed animals before her, and she said the practice requires daily commitment.
“We have a very strict hair and leg program that we do,” Miller said. “Every day after school, we come out here, we work them, we walk them, we do something with them so they get exercise and know what they’re doing.”
Miller had already earned reserve grand champion market goat and lamb at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo in February before competing at RodeoHouston. She said competing at different shows has helped her grow.
“Every time we go somewhere different, I meet a new friend and I learn more about showing livestock and how important it is,” Miller said.
Miller’s grand champion market lamb, named Wazowski, sold for $1 million in the junior market lamb auction — surpassing the previous record by $550,000. Miller said the buyers gave the purchase added significance.
“It was really amazing cause the people that bought it, they bought it in memory of their daughter that passed away in a car accident,” Miller said. “So just knowing they put all that money into my animal is really amazing.”
Miller said she managed her nerves going into the competition deliberately.
“I can’t get really nervous cause then all my nervousness will go into the sheep and then he’ll be nervous,” she said.
Miller and her family are preparing for Rodeo Austin, where she is scheduled to compete in the junior market lamb and goat show on March 20.
“You need to have confidence in yourself,” Miller said. “When something is hard, you need to keep trying. You can’t get down on yourself cause if you do, you’re just gonna give up on life.”
