The first Nordstrom to arrive in Texas is closing its doors.
The well-known retailer is set to shutter at Galleria Dallas, Nordstrom said in a statement. Its last day will be May 16.
Already, Nordstrom — which caters to higher-end department store shoppers — had shrunk its footprint at the shopping center. It moved out of the third floor and giving up more than 45,000 square feet of space around 2022.
The store opened in 1996, with hundreds of people waiting to get in at the Galleria.
While Nordstrom is pulling back from its major, traditional retail arm locally, it’s been investing elsewhere in North Texas with Nordstrom Rack, its lower-cost version. It recently opened stores in Prosper and Flower Mound, and has plans for a site in Murphy.

Shoppers can still find the traditional Nordstroms at sites that include NorthPark Center in Dallas and Stonebriar Centre in Frisco.
“We believe we’ll be best able to serve customers in the area by leveraging our surrounding stores and through our digital channels,” the company said.
“Decisions like this are never easy, and we understand the impact they have on our team members.”
Nordstrom isn’t the only department store to make changes amid shifting preferences with shoppers. Earlier this year, Saks Global, which includes Neiman Marcus, entered bankruptcy, and has since announced the shuttering of multiple locations.
Nordstrom last year closed stores in St. Louis, Missouri and Santa Monica, California, according to media reports. The moves follow its decision to go private, after being publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
Still, in 2025, Nordstrom said total sales grew to $15.9B, an all-time high, up 7% year-over-year.
The mall, which dates back to the early 1980s, has seen its tenant lineup shift over the years. In 2020, another department store, Belk, closed up at the shopping center. Today, that area has been taken over by the new Netflix House.
In a statement, Galleria Dallas said it was “disappointed to see them go.” Still, “we remain energized by the momentum of what’s ahead,” it added.
The shopping hub recently announced new stores at the site, including Aritzia, a women’s clothing brand that’s been expanding.
